The Blue Moon Night Light is designed to fit under your bed for a floor-level glow so you can "get up in the middle of the night without tripping or stubbing your toes on the bed frame." Of course, the 14 LEDs also act as a great reading light for the monsters. It's $29.95 from Solutions.

Just the facts . . .
Vivian Wheeler of Wood River, Illinois, has the world's longest beard for a woman. The longest strand from the follicle to the tip of hair was measured at 27.9 cm (11 in) in 2000. She prefers to tie the beard up, which allows her to continue with her day-to-day routines.

The 3 percent excise tax on people's phone bills was originally imposed in 1898 to help pay for the Spanish-American War. Since then, it has cost bsiness and consumers approximately $300 billion. It was originally a tax on the affluent because phone service was a luxury in 1898.

Vast numbers
of giant jellyfish — some weighing as much as 400 pounds and up to 6 feet in diameter — have appeared around Japan's coast since July, clogging and ripping fishing nets and forcing fishermen to spend hours hacking them apart before bringing home their reduced catches. Thanks Cindy P.

More collective nouns for animals
A murder of crows; an exaltation of larks; a shrewdness of apes; a cete of badgers. an obstinancy of buffalo; a cackle of hyenas. More

I think many of these could be used to describe various human groups . . . an obstinancy of Republicans.

I found this soup recipe in the Washington Post food section about five years ago It's the best soup recipe I've ever found. This soup is not hard to pepare, takes very little time to assemble and it tastes great. I recommend it highly. One note: I like my soups to have a stew-like thickness and quality . . . this recipe is miles away from Campbell's Chicken Soup and its ilk. If you make it, let me know how it turned out.

How to make chicken soup

1) Heat two tablespoons olive oil In a large pot,
2) Chop up
a medium onion and cook for two minutes until softened.
3) Dice a pound of assorted vegetables (fresh or frozen — I use carrots, and broccoli) and add to the pot.
4) Add three diced medium potatoes
or two drained 16 ounce cans of beans (white, black, or chickpeas.)
5) Add four washed chicken thighs (skins on).
6) Add one drained can diced tomatoes.
7) Add four ounces of uncooked wide or extra-wide egg noodles or one-half cup long-grain rice.
8)
Add 32 ounces of chicken broth
9) Add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper and salt.
10) Let the soup simmer for ten minutes. Remove the thighs.
11) Let the thighs cool slightly, pull the chicken off the bones, shred it and return to the soup.
12) Let the soup simmer until the vegetables are tender and the flavors have blended. (About 15-20 minutes.)
